Types of Braces

Braces Perth

Braces are the most common orthodontic method to correctly align teeth, establish a functional bite and create a natural smile

You’ve seen them in the mouth of what feels like every second teenager and you might have even had them yourself at some point! Braces are one of the great triumphs of orthodontics and are widely successful in creating beautiful, straight smiles. With modern dental advancements, there are now several types of braces to suit different patient needs and even desired looks throughout the treatment. At Smileworx, we offer:

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing today than ever before. Gone are the days of a metal-mouth; the modern option is much sleeker and smaller. These braces are made of high-grade stainless steel and straighten your teeth using metal brackets and arch wires.

The journey of braces can be a long one, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be boring.  With metal braces, you have the option of adding coloured elastics for a more unique and colourful smile. Perhaps your child would like to support their favourite football team, or celebrate Christmas! The supportive orthodontic team at Smileworx love working with children to make them feel good about their time with braces. Helping them to choose some of the vibrant colours and express themselves is just one way they can do that.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics to hold and guide the arch wire, meaning fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth. Your child’s teeth are able to move more freely and it is less likely that food will be caught in the appliance.

Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as metal braces, but use a specialised clip in place of elastics to help the arch wire to guide the teeth into place. The clip helps to reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth and requires fewer adjustments.

Ceramic (Clear) Braces

At Smileworx, it is important to us that your child feels good about their smile during your treatment, not only at the end. Ceramic braces are a more discreet alternative to traditional metal braces, as they are constructed of a clear ceramic material.  You can even customise the colours of the ceramic pieces to suit the exact tooth colour, making them even less noticeable. This particular option requires more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts.

Our considerate dental hygienists will take special care with explaining proper hygiene habits for children with ceramic braces, so they are aware of the importance of looking after them.
